RECOGNISE THE SEASON WHEN GOD IS NEAR TO YOUR BROKEN HEART

"“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (KJV)»"

PSALM 34:18; 1 SAMUEL 1:10–18

This scripture reveals a beautiful truth about God's nature: He does not abandon those whose hearts are broken. He draws near to those who are hurting, humble themselves before Him, and sincerely seek His help.

Hannah's experience in 1 Samuel 1:10–18 gives us a practical illustration of this truth. She was deeply distressed because of her situation. She carried a burden that others could not fully understand, and even Eli, the priest, initially misunderstood her prayer.

Yet Hannah did not allow the pain of her situation or the misunderstanding of another person to turn her away from God. She poured out her soul before the Lord.

When Eli finally understood her explanation, he spoke words of peace and blessing to her. In 1 Samuel 1:18, the Bible tells us that Hannah went her way, ate, and her countenance was no longer sad.

Why did Hannah's countenance change?

Her outward circumstances had not yet visibly changed, but something had changed in her response to God. She had brought her burden before the Lord, received words of encouragement, and departed in peace. Her changed countenance reflected a renewed hope and confidence in God, even before Samuel was born.

We should be careful not to assume that we know every reason for Hannah's inner change. Nevertheless, her experience teaches us that we can find peace in God's presence while we are still waiting for our breakthrough.

When It Feels Like Almost Everyone Is Against You

Every believer may encounter seasons when people seem to misunderstand their intentions, reject their efforts, oppose their decisions, or fail to recognise the pain they are carrying.

Sometimes, it may feel as though 90 per cent of the people around you do not understand you or are against you. At such moments, your heart may become discouraged, and you may be tempted to react in anger, withdraw completely, or give up on the good things you are pursuing.

But beloved, do not allow the rejection or misunderstanding of people to push you away from the presence of God.

When you feel broken, remember Psalm 34:18. When you feel misunderstood, remember Hannah. When you feel discouraged, take your burden to the Lord rather than allowing your emotions to determine your next action.

Not every painful situation means that a breakthrough is immediately coming, and we should not assume that everyone who disagrees with us is against us. However, a season of deep distress can become an opportunity to draw closer to God, seek His wisdom, examine our hearts, and receive His sustaining grace.

How Should You Respond in This Season?

1. Draw closer to God instead of reacting negatively.

When people misunderstand you, do not allow bitterness, revenge, or uncontrolled anger to become your response. Pray, seek wisdom from Scripture, and ask God to help you respond appropriately.

2. Maintain a humble and contrite heart.

A contrite heart is one that is humble, repentant, and willing to turn to God. Do not let the behaviour of others harden your heart. Allow God to correct you where necessary, comfort you where you are hurting, and strengthen you where you feel weak.

3. Do not surrender to discouragement.

Hannah's story reminds us that sorrow does not have to have the final word. Continue to do what is right, fulfil your responsibilities, and take wise steps even while you wait for God's direction.

4. Recognise God's nearness without presuming to know His timetable.

You may not know when or how your situation will change, but you can turn to God in the very moment of your pain. His presence is not limited to the day your testimony becomes visible.

5. Let peace guide your next step.

Like Hannah, seek the kind of peace that enables you to leave your burden with God and continue your journey with renewed hope. This does not mean ignoring genuine problems or refusing appropriate help. It means facing your situation with prayer, wisdom, and faith rather than despair.

A Word to Every Believer

Beloved, learn to recognise those moments when your heart is broken and your strength seems exhausted. Do not immediately interpret every painful season as abandonment by God. His Word assures us that He is near to the brokenhearted.

When it feels as though people do not understand you, return to His presence. When discouragement comes, pray before you react. When you are tempted to give up, remember that your present pain does not determine the whole story of your life.

Hannah went to the Lord with a sorrowful heart and left with a changed countenance. May we also learn to seek God sincerely, receive His peace, and trust Him while we wait.

Your encouragement: The season in which your heart is broken can also be a season in which you learn to depend more deeply on God. Do not give up on Him because people have misunderstood you. Draw near to Him, and remember His promise to draw near to the brokenhearted.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, help me to recognise Your nearness when my heart is broken. When I feel misunderstood, rejected, or discouraged, keep me from responding in bitterness or anger. Give me a humble and contrite heart, strengthen my faith, and teach me to seek Your wisdom in every situation.

Like Hannah, help me to pour out my heart before You and receive the peace I need to continue my journey. Deliver me from discouragement, guide my decisions, and help me remain faithful while I wait upon You. May my countenance reflect renewed hope, not because I can control every circumstance, but because I have placed my trust in You. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
